Tifton to host competitive BBQ judging class
TIFTON, Ga. — The Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) will be holding a training class for prospective competitive barbecue judges in Tifton on Saturday, Jan. 14. The class will be held at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture Conference Center, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and lasting until approximately 2:30 p.m. Participants of the judging course must be a registered GBA member. Participants can sign up to be a member of the Georgia Barbecue Association, as well as sign up for the training course at www.bbqga.org. The cost of the training course is $35 and is limited to only 50 people. The Georgia Museum of Agriculture is located at 1392 Whiddon Mill Road in Tifton. Colquitt County chamber selling tickets for annual banquet
MOULTRIE, Ga. — Tickets are on sale now for the 107th annual banquet of the Moultrie-Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce, set for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Colquitt County Arts Center. Highlight of the evening will be presentation of the annual Man of the Year, Woman of the Year and Agribusiness Person of the Year awards. The ticket cost is $40 per ticket; seating is limited to 275 people. Tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce at 116 First Ave. S.E. Board seeks input on school calendar
DALTON, Ga. — Dalton Public Schools holds two forums for interested parents and community members to provide input on the district’s 2017-2018 academic calendar. The first public forum is Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the Dalton High School lecture hall. The second forum is Thursday, Jan. 19. at 4 p.m. at the Dalton City Hall council chambers. The board of education will vote on the final calendar at its board meeting on Monday, Feb.13.
‘Thanking God for America’ event planned
VALDOSTA – Entertainment and food are scheduled to celebrate the nation. Ray Norton of Ray Norton Tire & Auto has scheduled an appreciation event called “Thanking God for America and You.” The event features Christian and gospel music from Carroll & Donna Roberson and the Plath Family Band and comedy from Christian ventriloquist Geraldine & Ricky, according to organizers. Carroll Roberson has recorded more than 60 musical albums during a 30-year period, with 37 albums still available, according to information from Carroll Roberson Ministries. He has written more than 300 songs and several books. Cancer led to his commitment to ministry. He accepted Christ in 1983. A year later, he was diagnosed with a cancerous growth on his throat, according to the Mississippi-based ministry. “With no promise that he would be able to talk any more, Carroll went through surgery and was even able to sing again within three weeks,” according to the ministry information. “Shortly after, Carroll surrendered to full-time ministry.” Norton has hosted similar events in the past. The event includes drawings for a 50-inch Sharp Smart TV, four tires, etc. Participants must be present to win, according to organizers. A free barbecue dinner will be served. The appreciation event is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 14, Mathis City Auditorium, 2300 N. Ashley St. Dinner at 5 p.m. Entertainment at 6 p.m. Admission: Free and open to the public.
