MOULTRIE, Ga. — Charges have been officially filed against a driver accused of hitting a Moultrie police officer as he tried to remove the keys from her SUV.
Miranda Lee Johnson, 32, 1008 Holmes Drive, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, fleeing and attempting to elude, obstruction of an officer, cruelty to children, DUI, DUI endangerment of a child under the age of 14, leaving the scene of an accident, driving on the wrong side of the road, transaction in drug-related objects, failure to stop at a stop sign, striking a fixed object, driving while license suspended and reckless driving.
As reported in the Jan. 6 Moultrie Observer, Moultrie police saw a blue Chevrolet Trailblazer at what appeared to be a drug purchase Jan. 4 in the 800 block of Sixth Street Southeast. Johnson got into the Trailblazer, police said, and as officers told her to stop, she began backing the SUV away. An officer reached in to turn off the ignition switch, and she allegedly accelerated, spinning tires, according to police reports.
The driver’s front door post struck Sgt. Justin Lindsay’s arm and drove it into the rear door post before he was struck by the driver’s exterior mirror.
Police said the officers got into their car and followed Johnson. They saw her run a number of stop signs, police said, and tried to maneuver to get ahead of her. When they saw her again, she was driving on the wrong side of the road toward Cox Elementary School, police said, so the officers ended the pursuit.
They did, however, travel in the same direction they’d last seen her heading, and they found the SUV abandoned behind a mobile home on South Boulevard.
A witness said the woman had run from the SUV while carrying a toddler. She and the child were found in the office of a nearby business. Johnson was placed under arrest, and the child was turned over to a family member.
Lindsay was treated at Colquitt Regional Medical Center and released.
