VALDOSTA, Ga.  — Police are investigating an armed robbery at a Valdosta store.

At 8 p.m. Thursday, Lowndes County E-911 received an emergency call from Dollar General, 810 Madison Highway, in reference to an armed robbery, according to Lt. Adam Bembry of the Valdosta Police Department. Police arriving at the store were told that a man walked into the store with his face covered and pointed a pistol at the employees, demanding that they open the cash register, Bembry said.

The suspect then pointed his pistol toward the ceiling and discharged the firearm, he said. The employees opened the register and handed an undisclosed amount of currency to the suspect, who then fled the area on foot, Bembry said. There were no reported injuries.

The store was sealed off with crime-scene tape as Valdosta Police Department Bureau of Investigation detectives and crime-scene technicians with the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory responded to the scene to assist in the investigation, Bembry said. Investigators are analyzing witness statements as well as video surveillance, he said.

The suspect was described by witnesses as an African-American male in his 20s, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing approximately 220 pounds.

“If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they are urged to contact the Valdosta Police Department immediately,” he said.
