MOULTRIE, Ga. — A victim in a rash of Tuesday night thefts tracked his Apple device to Valdosta, where police arrested two suspects — one in the theft and the second in a separate drug case.
On Wednesday morning the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office was inundated with more than 12 reports of thefts of property from unlocked autos. Law enforcement think the thefts were carried out from about midnight to 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Seven guns, some of which victims received as Christmas gifts, were among the property taken. Several phones, cash and purses also were taken during the crime spree that was mostly centered in the Tallokas Road area.
The owner of an Apple iPad on Wednesday afternoon got a “ping” from the device, sheriff’s Inv. Mike Murfin said. He tracked it down in Lowndes County and called sheriff’s investigators, who in turn contacted Valdosta police.
Police met the iPad owner and got the location of the device. Their investigation led to the recovery of the iPad and a couple of the stolen guns, Murfin said.
Police arrested Taurian Javon Werts, 18, of 5634 Fontana Road, Valdosta, and charged him with two counts of theft by receiving stolen property.
Colquitt County law enforcement did not have the identity of the second suspect who faces drug charges. Inv. Austin Cannon said that no other suspect had been identified in the thefts.
Werts has Moultrie connections, he said.
Investigators also are asking for assistance from the public. Anyone whose security video systems picked up anything suspicious Tuesday night are asked to call (229) 616-7430.
“We want to know if surveillance (cameras) caught anybody walking in the area or anything unusual (such as) vehicles parked along the roadway,” Cannon said.
