VALDOSTA — Jarrid Brown has been coaching football at the Valdosta Boys & Girls Club for 17 years. The last time he coached in a major postseason championship game was 2012 when his 10U team won the National Prep and Youth Football Association’s national championship game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

“That was the last big one,” Brown said. “We’ve won several postseason tournaments since then, but they’ve been tournaments that we’ve payed to get in.”

Brown’s 8U, 10U and 13U TitleTown All-Stars will play in the club’s first major postseason championship series in four years this week.

Each age division will play for its own world championship in the Run 4 Belts & Rings Football Championship Series, beginning Tuesday at Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs, Florida, 20 minutes from downtown Orlando, Florida.

“It gives me a feeling of extreme pride,” Brown said. “Those people saw my kids play and they said, ‘Hey man, that’s the type of team we need to have in Orlando’

“I’m just overwhelmed with pride.”

The four-day tournament will be comprised of teams from all across the U.S. TitleTown 10U plays at noon Tuesday, TitleTown 8U plays at 1 p.m. and TitleTown 13U plays at 2 p.m.

“I think they’ll give a maximum effort, because those kids are used to winning and they know what it takes to win,” Brown said. “I push them really hard.

“We’re going to go down there and give it all we’ve got and see how we come out on the other side.”

Brown said a source of motivation for continuing his coaching career is the knowledge that football is keeping kids from occupying themselves with everyday dangers.

“It gives them an opportunity to go to college for free, and basically this keeps them out of trouble and that’s why I’ve been doing it for so long,” he said.

“I do have a son on the team, he’s a 10-year-old. Next year he’s going to play middle school ball and I’m probably still going to coach at the club.”

There’s also a simpler reason why Brown continues coaching youth football.

“I just love doing it with the boys, man. It’s fun for me,” he said.
