Roanoke, Virginia, may no longer be a railroad hub adjacent to the Blue Ridge Mountains, but the trains still lumber through town, and there are plenty of things to see for visitors who’ve come for a peek of its railroading history.
The Virginia Museum of Transportation’s collection includes more than 50 pieces of rolling railroad stock — locomotives, flatcars, boxcars even a mail car. Visit www.vmt.org
The O. Winston Link Museum displays the images of a photographer devoted to capturing the work of Roanoke’s locomotives using advanced lighting techniques. Visit www.roanokehistory.org
The Roanoke Valley Visitor Center occupies the old Norfolk & Western passenger station, and large windows overlook the freight trains that still pass through the city. Visit www.visitroanokeva.com
