VALDOSTA – Only four more days of action in a row. The wins keep adding up for Colquitt County on the basketball court.
Cameron Singletary’s shooting stroke led to a game-high 18 points, and DaNas Andrews went inside and outside to net 16 points as the Packers of coach Andy Harden improved to 8-0 on the 2016-17 season and 2-0 in the Big South Shootout hosted by Lowndes High. With brief exceptions after the opening tip-off, Colquitt County never trailed the Washington County Golden Hawks and steadily did everything needed to take Tuesday’s early afternoon contest 73-52.
This game took place after Colquitt County’s late-afternoon start on Monday when the Packers defeated Summerville High out of South Carolina. Today, the bus goes back to Lowndes High’s gym so that Colquitt can complete its Big South schedule with a 4:30 p.m. start against West Orange High of Florida.
In defeating Washington County, the Packers also had a 13-point game from starting guard Tyrese King. Colquitt County made 10 3-point baskets, two of which came off the bench from the hands of Nizarre Thompson.
The first quarter was the most competitive, and it was Singletary directing the Packers to the advantage they would not relinquish. The point guard scored five points with his outside shooting touch and assisted 2 on the inbounds for Andrews. King stole the basketball from Washington County’s offensive side and took in all the way through the opposite rim.
The Hawks from Sandersville would go from trailing by six to narrowing the gap to two. That’s when Colquitt’s forwards crashed the boards, and Andrews and Quentin Dopson converted back-to-back putbacks.
Washington County had five makes from 3-point land, two coming in the first quarter. From that productive scoring, they would only trail the Packers by three, 17-14, going into the second quarter.
Harden, being the coach that stresses defense, had to like the team efforts against Washington County to start the second quarter. With double teams outside the arc and defensive rebounding, the Hawks didn’t get a field goal until 5:24.
Offense wasn’t coming as easy, but Singletary penetrated to score end to end and Dopson kicked out his latest offensive rebound to King. The guard stroked in 3 for a nine-point lead of 25-16. At 2:57 of the quarter, Jy Andrews supplied the first double-figure margin with the 3, 28-18.
King scored nine in all during the quarter, and it wasn’t all from the perimeter. He was fouled on the offensive glass and finished the three-point play.
But with two 3-pointers, the Golden Hawks seized a little momentum. They drew the charging foul Harden likes to see go Colquitt’s way and pushed the ball to cap a run of eight in a row. That put the Packer lead down to five, 31-26, but King stuck his second trey of the period at the 47-second mark and Montavious Ponder caused a key turnover to take the game into the half at 34-26.
The third quarter was about DaNas Andrews, first with his baby hook in the lane and 3-point swish for 39-30 Packers. When the Hawks’ outside game pulled them within six, Colquitt responded with a decisive 10-0 run. Singletary received a penetration dish pass in the corner to sink 3, then he assisted 3 more for King. At 1:43, Singletary was the one getting involved inside for a putback.
As Washington County stopped that run to trail 49-35, D. Andrews popped home one more trey. It was 52-36 going into the final period.
The Hawks only got as close as 14, 57-43, from a three-point play at 4:14. Singletary penetrated two more times for baskets and Dopson threw a lob assist inside to D. Andrews.
