MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Moultrie grocery store owner was attacked on Friday when he chased down a suspected shoplifter carrying a bag of meat.
Police were dispatched at about 5 p.m. to the 205 Sixth St. S.E. Save-A-Lot store to a report of a fight in which one of the participants had a gun.
When officers arrived, Al Solanki and one of his employees had a man detained.
Solanki told police that Tony Bernard Coates, the man being detained, had spit on him. He reported that he saw the suspect in the store with a bag already in his hand and then saw that meat inside the bag was from Sav-A-Lot.
When he confronted the suspect and asked for a receipt, police said, Solanki was attacked. The suspect then broke away and ran into the parking lot, where he eventually was detained.
Police charged Coates, 47, 127 Fifth St. S.E., with simple battery and theft by shoplifting.
In another shoplifting case on Friday an employee at Oxley’s, 818 W. Central Ave., chased down a thief and recovered the box of Summer’s Eve douche he had concealed on him.
The employee knew that the man had been banned from the store and, when told by other employees about the theft, confronted him in the parking lot. The man ran and the employee was able to catch him and recover the $3 worth of merchandise.
The man was not detained, but police will take warrants for the man’s arrest.
