The charges against Thompson were malice murder, felony murder and aggravated assault.

Thompson pled not guilty to all charges.

The jury could not agree on the two charges of malice murder and aggravated assault, but unanimously agreed to find him guilty of the felony murder charge.

Sentencing will take place at a later date.

Thompson was arrested and charged in Feb. 2015 in relation to the death of his wife at their home in Chula in Oct. 2014 after an autopsy ruled her death a homicide.

Peggy Thompson was found deceased in the couple’s bedroom with signs of having been beaten about the head with an unknown object and strangled.

The injuries were described as “extensive blunt force injuries” by Dr. Maryanne Gaffney-Kraft, the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy.

She concluded the cause of death was blunt force trauma in conjunction with asphyxia and that the manner of death was homicide.

The state called a total of 15 witnesses during the trial which started on Tuesday, including family members of the Thompsons, sheriff’s deputies and experts from the state crime lab.

The defense called no witnesses.

The prosecution’s closing argument centered on refuting the defense’s claim that inconsistencies in typed reports and the investigators who worked the case neglected to pursue all valid lines of inquiry.

The defense argued investigators had a preconceived notion about what happened and who perpetrated the crime.

The state argued that minor errors did not change the facts of the case and that the facts of the case pointed to Thompson’s guilt.
