Gas prices slide in South Georgia

VALDOSTA, Ga. — Gas prices slid in Lowndes County during the last week, though prices are still abnormally high when compared with years past. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Valdosta Saturday was $2.15, down by five cents from the previous week, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge report. In an unusual reversal, that price is significantly higher than it was a year ago, when gas in Valdosta averaged $2.03 a gallon. Earlier in the year, gasoline prices collapsed, with weekly averages driving lower and lower for months at a time as oil production outpaced demand. In September, this trend came to a screeching halt in the Southeast when a pipeline spill in Alabama caused price levels to spike in several states, triggering fears of shortages. Nationally, the average price of gasoline Saturday was $2.22, down by only a penny from seven days earlier and exactly the same as a year before, according to AAA. Statewide, Georgia’s average price Saturday was also $2.22, down from $2.26 a week earlier but still higher than the $2.09 level of a year ago, AAA said. The lowest price in Valdosta Saturday was $2.04 at a convenience store on U.S. 84, according to the price tracking website gasbuddy.com. For the fifth week in a row, no retailers in Lowndes County offered fuel for less than $2 a gallon, gasbuddy said. After an early slide, crude oil prices recovered in afternoon trading Friday. Benchmark U.S. crude rose 22 cents to close at $50.85 a barrel in New York. Brent crude, used to price international oils, gained 40 cents to close at $51.78 a barrel in London.
