Camp Cocoon clay shoot planned
VALDOSTA, Ga. — The second clay shoot to benefit Winnersville Camp Cocoon is scheduled for Aug. 13 at Southwinds Clays and Quail. Winnersville Camp Cocoon is a day camp hosted by Pruitt Cares Foundation for children and adolescents who have experienced separation or loss of a loved one due to death, deployment, incarceration or any other circumstance. Breakfast and lunch will be provided and prizes will be awarded to the top teams, according to event organizers. Last year the event had 10 teams, Alice Popielarz, community relations representative of Pruitt-Health said. This year, there are already 11 paid teams registered, she said. The event will consist of four-person teams and registration costs $100 per shooter. VA names Tifton clinic manager
TIFTON, Ga. – The Carl Vinson VA Medical Center has selected Donna Ammons, RN, as the manager for its new Tifton VA clinic, expected to open for services in late summer. A career nurse with 37 years of experience, Ammons eagerly sought a career with VA out of a sense of patriotism and a family tradition of military and public service. The Tifton VA Clinic will be located at 1824 Ridge Ave. North in Tifton. Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and services will include primary care, mental health and other basic healthcare services. Additional services will be available through the use of Tele-Health, a new VA initiative that allows veterans to access some healthcare needs using interactive visual technology. Veterans are advised to keep appointments already scheduled at other VA facilities until their care is transferred and an appointment is scheduled at the new Tifton CBOC. Veterans not currently enrolled in VA healthcare may obtain an application form online at www.va.gov or can visit the clinic after the opening to pick up an enrollment package. Thrive 2055 named finalist for national award
DALTON, Ga. — Thrive 2055, a collaborative regional initiative hosted by the Chattanooga, Tenn., Area Chamber of Commerce that includes Whitfield and Murray counties in Georgia, has been named a finalist for a national award presented by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE). Thrive 2055 focuses on proactive engagement of the tristate, 16-county region around Chattanooga to make the most of economic opportunities while preserving what is most cherished about the communities, culture and natural treasures that make the region so unique. Entries from three other organizations — Mason City Chamber of Commerce in Iowa, Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce in New York and Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce in Tennessee — have been named finalists for the award, which will be presented Aug. 10 in Savannah, Ga., at ACCE’s annual convention.
Church plans 2-day back-to-school event this weekend
MOULTRIE, Ga. — Citadel of Hope Church of God in Christ will host a two-day “Back 2 School Bash” this weekend. Saturday will be a Fun Day from 3-7 p.m. with games, water slides, barbecue and basketball competitions. Sunday will feature a family concert at 11:45 a.m. with performances by The Anointed Mims Singers. School supplies will be given away. All events will take place at the church, 805 W. Central Ave., in Moultrie.
African Fashion Show this weekend
WHITE SPRINGS, Fla. – The New Generation Evangelist Movement Ministry, run by Shirley Marshall will hold an African Fashion Show on Saturday, July 30 at Nelly Bly’s Kitchen at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. The event is a fundraiser for Another Way Inc., a domestic violence and rape crisis center. The event will start at 5 p.m. and admission is $5. The entrance fee into the park for fashion show attendees will be waived. The entertainment will include dancing by Christian Jackson “Lil Tank” and Jacob Jackson “Lil J.J.” Profession model Latoya Walthour NcNair will be there to show the kids how to be models. The fashion show will include African, Refurbished, Florida State University and University of Florida clothing. Non-perishable food and toys and clothes for small children will also be collected. Items that are being asked for include cleaning items, hygiene items, healthy snacks, school supplies and art supplies.

Probe continues in crash fatality
THOMASVILLE, Ga. — The at-fault driver in a fatal U.S. 319 South crash remains hospitalized and has not been questioned, the Thomasville Post 12 Georgia State Patrol commander said. Sgt. First Class Tommy Peeples said Antoinette O’Neill-Waynn, of Tallahassee, Florida, was driving on the wrong side of the road about 3 a.m. Thursday, July 21, when her vehicle struck head-on a car driven by Makeacha Malise Butler, of Thomasville, who died instantly. O-Neill Waynn remains hospitalized at Archbold Memorial Hospital, Peeples said, adding that she will be questioned by troopers when her condition improves. The crash was alcohol-related, Peeples said.

The categories are Small Business of the Year, Large Business of the Year, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Professional of the Year and The Legacy Award. Deadline to submit nominees is July 31.
