He has decided to get into administration and will be the middle school athletic director beginning this school year.

Mobley has coached at South Effingham and at Colquitt County since graduating from Georgia Southwestern, where he was an outstanding baseball player.

He was an assistant softball coach for one year before taking over as the head coach of the Colquitt County softball program the last three seasons.

Chance Pitts, Mobley’s former assistant, was named the program’s head coach and is getting the Lady Packers prepared for their Aug. 3 home scrimmage against Fitzgerald and their season-openers in Thomasville on Aug. 12-13.

Mobley was a varsity baseball assistant under Tony Kirkland since returning to Moultrie in 2009. He also was an assistant football coach for the Packers until 2012.

“I’m excited about the new opportunity,” Mobley said. “But I am going to miss building relationships with the kids.”

Mobley is part of one of Colquitt County’s prominent athletic families.

He started at linebacker for the Packers football team and was an honorable mention All-Region 1-AAAAA selection in 2001, when he helped lead the Mike Singletary-coached Packers to an 8-3 record. He led the Packers in tackles that year with 77 and also led the team in punting.

He also was a fine baseball player under Jerry Croft, hitting .377 for his career with nine home runs and 48 runs batted in. As a senior in 2002, Mobley batted .442 with three home runs and 21 runs batted in.

Mobley then played four seasons at Georgia Southwestern, starting as a corner infielder and moving shortstop his last two seasons, batting over .300 for his career.

He also got to work with the Americus-Sumter County football team while doing his student teaching before getting his first teaching and coaching jobs at South Effingham.

Kirkland, who was an assistant football and baseball coach at Colquitt County when Mobley was a Packer, was the head baseball coach and defensive line coach for at South Effingham when Mobley was there.

For two seasons, Mobley coached the Mustangs wide receivers and tight ends in the fall and worked with the infielders in the spring.

He is the older brother of Mike Mobley, a former Packer football and baseball player, and Gabe Mobley, who was an All-State offensive lineman for Colquitt County and is currently the starting center at Georgia State.

Jake is married to the former Britney Wetherington, a former co-Region 1-AAAAA Player of the Year for the Colquitt County girls basketball team.

They have a daughter Allie and a son Davis.
