MOULTRIE, Ga. — Hundreds of visitors are expected to come to Moultrie in early August, and civic leaders want the community to shine.

The Moultrie-Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the City of Moultrie and Colquitt County governments to stage two community clean-up days, July 19 and 23. The chamber is asking for volunteers to join them for one or two hours those mornings to pick up trash in high-profile areas around town.

The clean-ups will help the town look better for hundreds of divers, their coaches and families who will attend the Junior and Senior National Diving Championships, scheduled Aug. 1-14 at the Moose Moss Aquatic Center.

The events are planned for 8-10 a.m. both days, according to the chamber’s interim president, Tommie Beth Willis. But she said if a volunteer can participate for only an hour of that time, they’re still welcome.

“We want to put our best foot forward and really show off our community,” Willis said.

Willis said the effort will focus on Veterans Parkway and on the Tom White Linear Park (also called the walking trail or the bike trail). She said she expects the chamber’s volunteers will be assigned the walking trail while city and county workers will focus on hot spots along the bypass, but representatives of the chamber, the city and the county will meet Monday to settle those details.

Willis urged volunteers to register ahead of time by calling the chamber at 985-2131. Organizers need to know how many people to expect, she said. Already 12-15 volunteers have signed up.

The city will provide reflective vests, “grabbers” to pick up trash, gloves and trash bags, she said, and the Healthy Colquitt Coalition is donating water.
