LIVE OAK, Fla. — The Florida High School Activities Association (FHSAA) is considering changes to the playoff system for high school football in the state.

The proposed plan would eliminate district play, allowing teams to schedule games against any 10 opponents.

Under the current system, each district champion and second place team advance to the regional playoffs.

The new plan would pit the top eight teams from each region in the playoffs.

Teams would earn points for wins. More points would be awarded for wins against higher quality opponents. There is also an incentive to play teams that have eight or more wins, as you would earn points even in a loss against those teams.

Suwannee High School coach Kyler Hall said his team wouldn’t have to worry about finding quality opponents with the competition in the area.

The new rule would make a larger impact at 1A Branford High School where the Buccaneers are challenged with district opponents Trenton, Newberry and Dixie County.

BHS coach Roy Harden said he likes the new rule, but is focused on this season and will make the changes necessary if the playoff structure is changed.
