The exhibit by Greg Byrd, “Silhouettes in Abstract Expressionism,” opened on May 21st with a crowded opening reception at the Colquitt County Arts Center. As guests walked in to the happening event there was a red carpet and photo op at the entrance of the gallery. The wine was flowing as guests sat on leather chairs and sofas scattered throughout the gallery, nibbling on shrimp and various hors d’oeuvres. The artist, Greg Byrd, was hastily moving in between signing collectable posters that were for sale and snapping photos with the demanding crowd. There was a raffle for one of his paintings, and avid Byrd collector, Jodi Redding was the lucky one that went home with a new Byrd piece. Daniel Parrish entertained with pop music fully complimenting the bold pop art that fills the gallery walls. The event was definitely an exciting and entertaining experience for everyone in attendance. Greg Byrd grew up in Moultrie, Ga and now lives in Winter Park, Florida, with his wife, Cindy. His artwork focuses around capturing the core simplicity of women by applying mixed media to canvas that combines the figurative and abstract celebration of the female form. He has discovered a way to capture the complexities of a woman with an array of oils, acrylics, and crushed, powdered, or beaded glass suspended in transparent urethanes. His vivid, sensuous color play and tantalizing details are laced with iconic symbolism and innuendo: bleeding hearts, ghostly guns, scars and all the intricacies and nuances of the subject that inspired him. If you were unable to make the opening or stop by the Arts Center to view the exhibit there is a second chance. The Arts Center will be hosting a closing reception on June 17th from 7-9pm. There will be works on exhibit for sale, as well as, pieces from local collectors. We invite everyone to join us on June 17th, for the closing reception, which will once again be a red carpet affair! And another huge thank you to our local sponsors; Blue Sky Grill, Kim’s Fashions, Triangle Furniture and Dr. David Howington for making this exhibit possible! We invite everyone to enjoy Greg Byrd’s art exhibit for one last night before it leaves us! For more information, please visit our website at www.colquittcountyarts.com or call at 229-985-1922.
