Outdoor movie series begins Monday
DALTON, Ga. — “Screen on the Green,” a free family outdoor movie series, is held, weather permitting, Friday at the Dalton Green Park, beside the Whitfield County Courthouse. The movie starts at sundown, with games, vendors and fun starting at 7 p.m. This event is hosted by the Young Professionals of Northwest Georgia. To vote on the movie to be shown, see the event link on the Young Professionals of Northwest Georgia’s Facebook page. Wiregrass hosting TIMBER Camp
VALDOSTA, Ga. –– Wiregrass Georgia Technical College and Enay Coaching will host Camp TIMBER, July 18-21, at the Valdosta campus. The camp will be held 8 a.m.-3 p.m. daily and is for children ages 12-14. Participants will experience the great outdoors through team-based adventure challenges and educational activities, according to Wiregrass. Activities include ropes challenge course, teamwork hike at Reed Bingham State Park, wildlife presentations, and a mini-graduation day. The curriculum promotes STEM using tree and environmental activities, leadership, and career goal planning. The cost of the camp is $199 per child with sibling discounts available. Annual Lake Sinclair Pirate Boat Parade slated for June 4
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — The fifth annual Lake Sinclair Pirate Boat Parade is slated for Saturday, June 4 on Lake Sinclair. Participants are urged to decorate their chips — whether it’s a pontoon, ski boat or jet ski — and dress up as pirates for this fun-filled day of music and fellowship. Boats will set sale at 2 p.m. near Goat Island on Lake Sinclair. The Boat Parade lasts approximately 1 1/2 hours and ends at Power Point in Milledgeville. A free, brown bag picnic will begin at 3:45 p.m. Guests are welcome to arrive by boat or by land. Parking is available. Access by land is available via Lake Laurel Road to Julie Ingram Road to Dam Road. The park is at the end of Dam Road in Milledgeville. Music will be provided by Uncle Earl and friends starting at 4:30 p.m. until and continuing until around 6:30 to 7 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are requested to help cover the cost of the park rental and supplies for the event. Games and raffles and other shenanigans are anticipated. All proceeds above the cost of the event will be given to benefit the veterans at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville.
Memory loss classes offered
TIFTON, Ga. – The Tifton Regional office of the Alzheimer’s Association will host several classes this summer: “The basics: Memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease,” June 7, 6 p.m.; “Know the 10 signs: Early detection matters,” May 25 at 10 a.m. and June 14 at 6 p.m.; “Healthy living for your brain and body,” May 31 at 10 a.m. and June 21 at 6 p.m. Classes at Legacy Village of Tifton. Parties reach accord in EMC lawsuit
CAIRO, Ga. — A Superior Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit against Grady EMC following an agreement the EMC reached with a group of dissatisfied members. Terms of the settlement include an accelerated retirement for Tommy Rosser and the establishment of an independent committee that will make recommendations to the Grady EMC board of directors this fall. “This dismissal is good news for Grady EMC,” said Bo Rosser, president of Grady EMC. “It avoids the costs of protracted litigation and allows our employees to focus on serving our members.” The agreement outlines other policy changes. Grady EMC will not make loans to officers or directors of the EMC or allow work on employee vehicles at the company garage or storage of employee vehicles by the EMC. The settlement ends a protracted battle with a small group of dissenting members. It also includes a payment of $75,000 to assist with plaintiff’s attorney fees, which will be paid by Grady EMC’s insurer.
Rebecca Hagan Lee to lead genealogy workshop
MOULTIRE, Ga. — The Ellen Payne Odom Genealogical Library invites the public to join nationally bestselling author Rebecca Hagan Lee 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 28, at the Moultrie Library, 204 Fifth St. S.E. as she presents “Trailing Your Elusive Ancestors.” Lee will offer a variety of research tools and methods to help you find the clues you need to locate your most elusive ancestors. She will offer tips gleaned from her years of research and her work as a former library assistant at the John E. Ladson Genealogical Library. Church hosts Memorial Day dedication
BRANFORD, Fla. — San Juan Mission Catholic Church will be hosting a Memorial Day event 11-11:15 a.m., Sunday May 29th. A new trio of flag poles will be dedicated and memorial crosses will be placed in remembrance of deceased church members who served in the military. The community is invited to attend.
