MOULTRIE, Ga. — A man accused of shooting a Doerun resident Thursday night outside his home was in a Valdosta hospital on Friday with injuries from a severe beating he received in Moultrie.
Police did not know on Friday whether the violent incidents were related.
Craig Brown, 20, was shot at about 9:45 p.m. while sitting in a car outside his 600 S. Green St. residence.
Brown apparently was grazed by a bullet, and police described his injury as “very minor.”
Paul Dawson Jr., 19, was not so lucky as a Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office deputy who found him early Friday morning in Northwest Moultrie immediately called for an ambulance.
“I was able to locate the (suspected) offender on First Street Northwest in Moultrie,” sheriff’s Inv. Michael Cox said. “The suspect had been beat up. His assault happened after the shooting.”
Moultrie police, who are investigating the assault on Dawson, said he has not given many details about that attack.
While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, Dawson told deputies that he was injured during a fight over his girlfriend at the 532 27th St. S.E. Paradise apartment complex, Moultrie Police Department Inv. Tonero Bender said.
“(Dawson) said he had been in Doerun to visit his girlfriend, Kiana Lowery,” Bender said. “Upon Paul’s returning to Moultrie, he stopped off at Paradise apartments. While there he was confronted by an unknown man named ‘Raheem.’
“Paul stated he and Raheem got into an argument over his (Dawson’s) girlfriend. At some point they got into a fight. Raheem used his fist to hit Paul in the face, and at one point picked him up and slammed him to the ground.”
At the time, Dawson was unwilling to give any additional information.
Both the shooting in Doerun and the assault of Dawson remain under investigation
“There’s no way to know if they are connected at this point,” Cox said.
Police had not established a motive for Brown’s shooting as of Friday. Arrest warrants have been taken for Dawson charging him with aggravated assault.
Phone calls Friday afternoon to Valdosta hospitals seeking a condition report on Dawson were not returned.
