Driver with toddler in floorboard faces several charges

MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Macon woman with a toddler in the back floorboard and pistol in a cooler — and who was unable to articulate her point of departure or destination — faces a variety of charges, including drivng under the influence of drugs.

At about 10:36 a.m. Friday a Colquitt County deputy detected a 2002 Lincoln Town Car traveling 90 miles an hour in a 55 zone on Highway 319 North. After turning around, the deputy followed the Lincoln south for about 3.5 miles before catching up to the speeding car near Seminole Drive.

The driver, later identified as Alyssa Adams, told the deputy that she was not sure where she was heading but that she had the location on her cell phone. She later gave her destination as Leesburg where she said she was going to pick up her boyfriend, who was getting out of an unknown hospital.

A check of Adams’ name and birth date indicated her Georgia driver’s license expired in 2014, police said. Adams insisted that she had only a license issued by the state of Michigan but that she did not have it with her and that it possibly had expired.

She gave permission to search the car, police said. During the search the officer found a glass smoking implement with residue in the driver’s door panel and a small weighing scale in the arm rest.

Inside a purse the officer found a piece of aluminum foil that contained the corner of a plastic bag, inside of which there were several clear “stone-like” objects, police said. A cooler in the back seat contained a .25-caliber pistol and ammunition as well as ammunition for a larger-caliber weapon.

As the officer went to speak with a 4-year-old girl in a child seat in the back seat he noticed a small child asleep on the floorboard of the Lincoln.

Adams, 30, 24545 New Clinton Road, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, possession of methamphetamine, super speeder violation, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, expired license and child restraint violation.

She remained in Colquitt Jail on Wednesday and was being held on a $30,000 bond. The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services took custody of the girl and 2-year-old boy.
