VALDOSTA, Ga. — There will be a familiar look to Jay Rome as the former Valdosta star tries to break into the National Football League.
Rome, a tight end from the University of Georgia, signed as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday night.
“It all started with that sweet sweet black and gold @steelers #SteelerNation,” Rome tweeted Saturday, announcing his signing.
Those will definitely be familiar colors for Rome, who was an Under Armour All-American and SuperPrep All-American during his time at Valdosta High. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Rome caught 45 passes for 555 yards and seven touchdowns during his final season with the Wildcats in 2010 in Rance Gillespie’s offense.
The four-star recruit, though, battled injuries during his five years in Athens. In all, Rome hauled in 38 passes for 398 yards and three touchdowns with the Bulldogs, posting his most productive season as a redshirt freshman in 2012 when he had 11 receptions for 152 yards and two TDs.
Pittsburgh has four tight ends on its roster including veterans Matt Spaeth and Ladarius Green. Spaeth had two catches for 10 yards with the Steelers a year ago, while rookie Jesse James had eight catches for 56 yards and a touchdown. Green had 37 receptions for 429 yards and four TDs with the Chargers before signing with the Steelers in March. Meanwhile Heath Miller was Pittsburgh’s top target from the TE position with 60 catches for 535 yards and two scores before retiring in February.
