MOULTRIE — A man well known to law enforcement who was arrested Wednesday as he exited a county residence with a load of weapons faces burglary and home invasion charges in the afternoon break-in.

Multiple officers responded as Colquitt County’s 911 dispatchers received back-to-back calls of a man trying to enter homes on Cherokee Drive, the first in the 300 block and the second in the 400 block. One woman was confronted by a man with a gun inside her residence before she ran outside and escaped.

“(Someone) called in about a suspicious male just before 1 o’clock,” Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office Inv. Mike Murfin said. “Law enforcement responded to the call. The second call then came in, where the lady indicated a male was trying to get into her home.”

While the victim was speaking to 911 the man apparently hung up her phone.

“We don’t have information he had a gun when he went into the house,” Murfin said. “However, before he confronted the homeowner, who was on the phone with 911, he was able to acquire one.”

The frightened woman escaped out of the back door, and the intruder did not pursue her.

“Two veteran officers responded to the residence in the 400 block,” Murfin said. “One of the officers was able to go in the back door and made contact with Mr. Halen (Ladow) Weaver as he exited the house through the front door holding several guns. He was taken to the ground. Fortunately he was taken into custody without incident and will be charged accordingly.”

Weaver had not been charged as of Wednesday afternoon, but does face a number of felony counts in connection with the home invasion, Murfin said.

Weaver was released from Colquitt County Jail about two weeks ago after being arrested on a probation violation charge. He was sentenced in September in connection with an October mini crime spree in which he stole a van from the domestic violence shelter Serenity House, wrecked it, and then stole a four-wheeler on the other side of the county.

He pleaded guilty to one count each of theft by taking and criminal damage to property, and the second felony theft count was dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Weaver, 29, and a Doerun woman were arrested on Oct. 5, 2014, after police received reports of two people knocking on doors along Thigpen Trail and telling residents they were being targeted for death by drug cartels.

Prior to that, police said, the two took a 2005 Town & Country van from Serenity House, taking out some 60 feet of fence in driving away from the facility. Officers found the van wrecked a short time later not far from the shelter.

Later in the day a Yamaha four-wheeler was stolen from Anthony Tillman’s residence in the 1900 block of Old Berlin Road. A resident in the 100 block of Wilder Road reported finding the Yamaha Big Bear in his yard.

Superior Court Judge James G. Tunison Jr. sentenced Weaver in September to serve five years on probation, a $2,000 fine and 80 hours of community service.

Tunison also ordered Weaver to six months’ intensive outpatient drug abuse treatment.
