MOULTRIE — The Moultrie Junior Woman’s Club recently announced Davis Tyler as the February Mentor of the Month.

Tyler, a former Cox Elementary School teacher, has been a YMCA mentor for three years.

When asked why he decided to become a mentor, Tyler replied, “The Cox Elementary School students and staff have always been like family to me. It was impossible for me to retire from Cox and not continue to be a part of that family.”

Tyler’s favorite part of mentoring is when he visits his two mentees and their classmates. He says they are always enthusiastic to learn and receive one-on-one support, clamor and beg to go with “Mr. T,” making his visit always seem worthwhile.

His current mentees regularly ask, “Will you be with us next year?” the club said.

Tyler said, “There are many dedicated mentors at Cox. My hat is off to all of them.”

The Moultrie YMCA Mentoring program is a school-based mentoring program working with more than 150 volunteers from the community. Students are referred to the YMCA’s Mentoring program by a counselor, teacher or principal.

Volunteer mentors are always needed, as referrals are made daily. To learn more about the program, contact Jan Barrow at the Moultrie YMCA, 985-1154 or visit the website, www.moultrieymca.org.
