MOULTRIE — A Moultrie man accused of assaulting a sheriff’s deputy with his pickup truck during a car chase involving multiple officers has been indicted by a Colquitt County Grand Jury.
James Lee Clayton, 27, 1806 West Blvd., was indicted on 11 counts, the most serious being aggravated assault on a peace officer, in connection with the May 31 car chase.
Police said that a deputy out on patrol at about 12:05 a.m. on Anderson Drive, just north of Moultrie, saw Clayton driving a 1997 Dodge Ram truck. The officer reportedly recognized Clayton and knew there was an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest.
After catching up with the truck near the intersection of North Main Street and Sylvester Highway the officer tried to make a traffic stop. Instead, police said, Clayton tried to outrun the officer, who was joined by several other deputies during the course of the chase that went through Moultrie and Funston before turning onto Kendalwood Church Road.
Police said that when they tried to box in the truck in the 1100 block of Kendalwood Church Road, Clayton intentionally swerved to hit one of the patrol cars.
The chase ended near Hamilton Elementary School, about 15 miles from where it started.
In addition to aggravated assault on a peace officer, Clayton was indicted on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, interference with government property, disregarding traffic control device, reckless driving and failure to maintain. He also is charged with five counts of failure to stop at stop sign.
If convicted on the assault charge Clayton could be sentenced up to 20 years in prison. The offense carries a 5-year minimum sentence.
