Saunders throws 4 TD passes in JV victory over Valdosta

MOULTRIE — Quarterback Jay Saunders turned in his second straight sterling performance and T.O. Jenkins caught three touchdown passes as the Colquitt County junior varsity blanked Valdosta 41-0 on Thursday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

The Colquitt County defense sacked the Valdosta quarterbacks five times and special teams contributed two blocked punts by J.J. Peterson.

The JV Packers are now 2-0 and have won 10 straight games dating back to the final two contests in 2013.

Colquitt County opened its season last week with a 34-21 victory over Lowndes in which Saunders completed 19-of-25 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns.

Playing just the first two quarters against Valdosta, Saunders completed 16 of 20 passes for 284 yards and four more touchdowns.

He also ran for a score.

Jenkins started his three-touchdown afternoon by gathering a long pass from Saunders on the first play of the game and taking 82 yards for a touchdown.

On Valdosta’s first series, the Wildcats suffered two sacks, a run for no gain and a 5-yard penalty.

Then, when they punted, Peterson blocked it out of the end zone for a safety and an 8-0 Packers lead.

Colquitt drove 56 yards on its next possession, capping it off with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Saunders to Jenkins. Baudilio Martinez kicked the extra point and the Packers led 15-0 with 4:45 left in the first quarter.

Saunders and Jenkins collaborated again on the third play of second quarter, making connection on a 6-yard touchdowns pass. The Martinez conversion put the Packers up 22-0 with 8:40 left in the first half.

Peterson got his hand on another Valdosta punt giving the Packers possession on the Wildcats 21 with 6:44 remaining in the half.

Saunders ran it in from 4 yards out three plays later and the Packers led 28-0 with 5:52 remaining.

The final touchdown pass by the junior quarterback came on fourth-and-1 from the Wildcats 19 with just over 2 minutes remaining in the half on a throw to Johnari Greene.

The second half was played with a running clock.

The Packers added their final score on 12-yard by Ashon Southerland on their first possession of the third quarter and Martinez converted.

Jenkins finished with five catches for 119 yards. Greene, Ty Powell, Tyran Shealey, Sheronsky Sloan and Taylor Walker each had two catches.

Valdosta completed just 8-of-19 passes.

The JV Packers will travel to play next at Lowndes at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10.
