MOULTRIE — Clara King Tyler Slaughter, 79, of Moultrie, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, at Mother Easter Baptist Church with the Rev. Freddie Castle officiating. Burial will follow in St. James Pallbearers Cemetery #2.
She was born March 13, 1935, in Funston, to the late Johnnie Lee King. Due to her mother’s untimely death, she was adopted and reared by her foster parents, Samuel and Sarah Tyler. She received her education in Colquitt County, graduating from the Colquitt County Public School System and receiving her Georgia State License as a licensed beautician. She became a Christian at an early age and was very active in her church. She was a former member of Willow Grove Church and was adorned as Ms. Willow Grove in 1978. At the time of her passing, she was a member of Mother Easter Baptist Church and served in many different positions. Over the last 35 years, she served in many different capacities within Mother Easter to include: Sunday school teacher, senior choir member, and chairwoman of the Evelyn Kendrick Circle, usher, Gladiator, and a faithful member of the Francisco Club.
She was married to W.J. Slaughter in 1955, until his death on May 27, 2013.
In addition to her husband W.J. Slaughter, her mother Johnnie Lee King, and foster parents Samuel and Sarah Tyler, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnnie B. King and Joseph King; and five sisters, Willie Mae King Fowler, Lillie Bell King McClendon, Elizabeth King Smith, Ferrie King Tyler Williams and Betty Jean King Turk.
Survivors include a foster-sister, Louise Tyler-Stephens of Thomasville, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Earnestine King of Saint Petersburg, Fla.; nieces, Velma King, Ellenor Anderson and Annette Hadley, all of Moultrie, who served as her caretakers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.
