Packer wrestlers take three bronze medals in Columbus tournament

MOULTRIE — Tray Harper, Garrett May and Hudson May earned bronze medals and Jacob Comer took a fifth-place finish to help lead the Colquitt County wrestling team to ninth place in the Hardaway Invitational held Friday and Saturday at Columbus State University.

Harper, werstling at 106 pounds, won his first two matches, pinning Shayne Paulk of Veterans and Aaron Turner of Spencer before losing by pin to Aaron Maxfield of Lee County.

He finished the tournament by pinning Paulk again and taking a 7-4 decision over Dieondre Murphy of Jordan.

Garrett May wrestled at 152 and opened with quick pins of Steven Vlentine of Jones County and Brendon Phillips of Shaw.

He then was pinned by Braden Johnn of Creekview, before finishing with pins of Justin Perry of Jordan and Zack Wilkinson of Northside-Columbus.

Wrestling at 160, Hudson May opened with a 10-8 loss to Franklin Ellis of Harris County, but then reeled off five straight wins.

He pinned Markevio Thomas of Shaw and Chase Boleware of Central-Phenix City and then won a decision over Kameron Blackshear of Spencer 8-3.

In a rematch with Ellis, Hudson May took a 8-1 decision.

He finished with a 4-3 decision over Emilio Evans-Pagan of Hardaway.

Comer, wrestling at 195, began the tournament by pinning Westin Echols of Kell and Jordan Ford of Carver-Columbus.

He then took an 11-9 decision over Tre Goggins of Carver-Columbus.

In his final match, he was pinned by Torrez Finney of Jones County.

Hayden Suggs, wrestling at 138, went 3-2 in the tournament, winning a 4-3 decision over Nathan Spillers of Central-Phenix City; a 10-3 decision over Sam Whitehead of Newnan; and major 15-5 decision over Nick Nelson over Jones County.

Also for the Packers, Alejandro Jimenez won a major decision 16-8 and was pinned twice at 113; Miguel Carranza won a 16-0 technical  decision and a 13-11 decision and was pinned twice at 120; Savonte Wilson had a pin and was pinned twice at 126; Enrique Aguilar had a pin and lost a pair of decisions at 132; Jorge Martinez had a pin and lost to decisions at 145; and Shelby Burnette won by pin and was pinned twice at 170.

The Packers, who have a dual meet record of 4-4, will be on the mats next on Jan. 2-3, when they compete in the Wildcat Invitational at Valdosta High. They will be back at home on Jan. 20 to meet Thomas County Central.
