Pamela Simmons to speak at Women’s Day

The Lewis Cathedral Church of God in Christ, 900 Ninth Ave. N.W., under the leadership of Superintendent J. S. Lewis, will celebrate Women’s Day on Sunday, July 27, at 3 p.m. The theme is “Women Who Will Praise God in the Midst of Trouble.”

The guest speaker will be Pamela S. Simmons, a native of Moultrie who resides in Winston-Salem, N.C., with her husband, Sherman. Simmons is a member of the St. John CME Church in Winston-Salem, under the leadership of the Rev. Omar Dykes, where she assists teaching Sunday school and Bible study, and she is a member of the Women of Strength and Purpose Women’s Ministry. She is the author of two Christian books, “The Power of Women Prayer Warriors” and “Favour in the Enemies Camp,” due for publication in August.

Simmons earned a bachelor’s degree in speech and theater at Albany State University, master’s degree in English literature at Northwestern State University of Louisiana, and the Ph. D. from Walden University. She is employed at Winston-Salem State University as associate professor of English and directs the Writing Center and the Writing in the Major Program. In 2009, she received the James E. Patterson Outstanding Teacher Award at Winston-Salem State University and earned a service award for the QEP Writing in the Major Program.

Simmons is a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Her professional membership includes Regional Director of the North Carolina English Teachers Association, a member of the National Council Teachers of English Diversity Committee, advisor of the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honors Society and a North Carolina Ready for Success Fellow.

Simmons is the daughter of Mary Strong and Luke Strong Jr. and the granddaughter of Bernice Blunt of Moultrie.

Women are asked to wear white and the service is open to the public.
