A Doerun ministry is sponsoring a conference next week to help pastors and other Christians learn to relate to loved ones who are experiencing homosexual feelings.

Titled “Christian Counsel for a Confused Culture,” the three-day event is being sponsored by Born That Way Ministries.

The ministry was begun a couple of years ago by the Revs. David “Johnny” Nixon and his father-in-law, the Rev. Glenn Hamm. Based on Matthew 19:11-12, Nixon said, that while people aren’t “born to be gay,” some are “born to be celibate.”

But society, especially the church, forces people to choose, he said: Either you enjoy relations with the opposite sex, or else you’re gay.

Nixon said he hopes the conference will help pastors and other Christians see in a different light their loved ones who are struggling in this situation.

The conference will be held 6-8:30 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday, July 20-22, at Grace Independent Baptist Church, 197 Hopewell Church Road. Nixon, the pastor of First Love Baptist Church in Doerun, said neither his church nor Grace Independent are officially affiliated with Born That Way Ministries, but Chris McPherson, pastor of Grace Independent Baptist, sits on the ministry’s board of directors.

The keynote speaker will be the Rev. S.M. Davis, a conservative minister and evangelist who speaks nation-wide.

His ministry, Solving Family Problems, gives Biblical solutions to critical family and church problems, according to his website, www.solvefamilyproblems.org.

Topics at the conference will include:

• Understanding the gift of being single.

• Preventing sexual confusion.

• Achieving deliverance from sexual sin.

• Initiating a family intervention.
