A Pavo man with a history of burglary arrests faces a new theft charge after a homeowner held him at gunpoint until police arrived after confronting him at his residence.
Waylon Griner, 42, of the 2700 block of Highway 202, Meigs, was sleeping Sunday morning in his back bedroom when he heard the doorbell ring.
When Griner got out of bed, he saw someone running from his shed to a green Chevrolet SUV, where he was trying to load a Murray lawn mower into the back seat, Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office reports said. Griner confronted Larry Jason Hood and held him with a shotgun until a deputy arrived.
Griner was seated on the ground with Griner holding the shotgun.
Hood, 41, 536 Heard Road, was charged with theft by taking.
In August 2008 he was arrested in connection with a series of nine burglaries in Colquitt County. Among the property stolen were weed trimmers, edgers, leaf blowers and hand tools.
At the time, the sheriff’s office said that the perpetrator of those thefts knocked on doors and, if a resident was home would say he was looking for someone but was at the wrong house.
Hood pleaded guilty in November 2008 to a single count of burglary in Colquitt County and was given a 10-year prison sentence.
That same year he also was convicted on forgery and theft by taking charges in Colquitt County, attempted burglary in Mitchell County and burglary in Brooks County.
He was released from prison in November.
