Propst pleased with spring practice

Rising senior running back Sihiem King cuts behind the blocking of Micah Edwards (67) and Will Matney (50) during Colquitt County’s scrimmage on Monday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

Rush Propst said that after 10 days of spring practices, he feels like he knows what he and his staff need to work on to get ready for the 2014 season that opens three months from Saturday.

The Packers held their final spring scrimmage on Monday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium and Propst said the team improved from its previous scrimmage held there.

“I know where our deficiencies lie,” Propst said on Tuesday. “Things are a lot more clearer to me than they were this time last year.”

Some of the Packers problems can be attributed to the lack a coach on each side of the football, Propst said.

“I think you can tell Chase Parrish went through spring without a quarterback coach,” Propst said. “We didn’t spend any time this spring on fundamentals.

“And some of our struggles in the middle on defense are because we lack a coach there.”

Propst said he should be adding a quarterbacks coach and a defensive coach shortly.

Those vacancies were created when previous offensive coordinator Shawn Sutton and defensive tackles coach Greg Tillery resigned after last season.

Offensively, Propst said he is pleased with the progress of tight ends Shaun Bonner, who had a big scrimmage on Monday, and Chris Bouie.

Young receivers Brandon Robinson, J.J. Peterson, Isaiah Thomas and Sheronsky Sloan are making strides, Propst said.

Sloan, who caught a first-half touchdown pass from Parrish on Monday, has especially caught Propst’s eye.

And Propst likes the depth of the running back corps which includes Sihiem King, Ty Lee, Nate Powell, Rafael Merritt and rising sophomore Ty Jones.

“That should allow us to get in some two-back (formations),” Propst said.

The offensive line on Monday was without projected starting guard Noah Moore, who was down with a bad ankle. He was replaced by Kyle Duke.

The rest of the line appears to be set with Micah Edwards at center, Will Matney at the other guard and veterans Alfred Brown and Cade Blackburn at the tackles.

“I think we are a little further along there than we were last year,” Propst said.

On defense, the inside three positions are being held down a group that includes Quintin Moore, Ty’Kevious Phillips, Brandon Wynn, Alex Williams and I-Key Pinkins.

Demetrius Walker and Tomarcio Reese are more than holding their own on the outside.

Veterans Quintin Hampton and Bull Barge are playing in the middle.

Hampton was named in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution story that ran Monday as one of the top 10 linebackers in the state.

Propst said he believes Barge is right up there with him.

The development of Ja’Quain Blakely and Ricky Dunbar will enable to Packers to better utilize the versatility of Hampton and Barge, Propst said.

“We have more numbers than we’ve ever had inside,” he said.

Safety Javonte Woods and corner Taif Smith went into spring with jobs that were theirs to lose and they did nothing to put their positions in jeopardy.

Akaari Ryce, Jamarius Walker and Rakeem McCloud are battling for the other corner position.

Landon Scott has been the most consistent at the other safety position, Propst said.

Luis Martinez is expected to hold down the place-kicking position as he continues to recover from last season’s knee surgery.

Parrish and Sloan are working as the holders.

Propst said McCloud and Zay Lewis were the players who most improved over the course of the 10 days of spring practice.

And those spring practices were among the toughest Propst has put one of his teams through he said.

“We really grinded them last week,” he said. “We wore them down pretty good.”

As the Packers head into a two-week break, Propst said the problems he found were all “fixable.”

The Packers will continue weight training, conditioning and 7-on-7 work four days a week on the weeks starting June 9, June 16 and June 23.

According to the Georgia High School Association, there can be no practices during the week of June 30-July 4.

On July 11-13, the Packers will be in Dalton to compete in the 7-on-7 competition they won last year.

Colquitt will host four teams in an organized training activity (OTA) on July 16-18.

Full practices without pads will begin on July 25. Two-a-day practices in pads will begin on Aug. 1
