- The senior division drew four competitors.
The Moultrie YMCA’s goal in hosting a kid’s triathlon was to have youth challenge themselves and complete the course.
And they did just that.
The iTri Kids Triathlon, held Saturday, May 10, at the YMCA allowed children ages 7-14 to compete in the swim, bike and run event.
Families from south Georgia traveled to Moultrie for the triathlon. In the junior division, for ages 7-10, competitors swam 50 yards, biked 2.5 miles and ran a half-mile.
In the senior division, for ages 11-14, competitors swam 100 yards, biked five miles and ran one mile.
“We hope that this event has fostered an increased interest in overall health at an early age,” says Robin McCord, director of the event and Moultrie YMCA Senior Program Director. Some kids who participated in the triathlon may have excelled in only one or two areas of the event.
“We hope that by participating and completing all three event areas, that the children are more encouraged to cross-train in a healthy and fun way.”
Daniel DeMott of Moultrie took home the Gold in the senior division for the second year.
Daniel finished the course in just 27:05, beating his time for the 2013 iTri. Coming in second place in the senior division was Moultrie’s Mary Grace Powers with a time of 39:51. Cais Cook, of Moultrie, took third place with a time of 41:19.
Moultrie’s Baylen Young won the junior division with a time of 18:54.
Trailing Young was Case Gregory, of Norman Park, with a time of 19:11. Alec Perry came in right behind taking third place with a time of 20:23.
“Each and every athlete tried their very best,” says McCord. “Staff, volunteers and parents are so impressed with the kids. They blew us away with their athleticism.”
Competing in this year’s triathlon’s junior division were Baylen Young, Case Gregory, Alec Perry, Cam Cook, Meg Howell, Trip Gregory, Jack Perry, Jimmy Johnson, Ellis Turnipseed, Abby Powers, Grace Costin, Caroline Chapura, Will Stevens, Tuck Gregory, Josh Fillingame and Charlie Stevens
The senior division included Daniel DeMott, Mary Grace Powers, Cais Cook and Ryan Smith.
Volunteers, including the Moultrie Police Department, helped secure a safe and fun event.
