Millions of Americans will gather Thursday, May 1, in more than 42,000 places to commemorate the National Day of Prayer.

One of those places will be the Lewis Hill Amphitheater on the Colquitt County Courthouse Square.

Local Christians, led by the Colquitt County Pastors Prayer Group, will come together at noon that day to pray for the future of our nation and community and elements critical to its well-being.

During the program, expected to last an hour, local pastors will lead attendees in prayers for the Church, ministries and leaders; for the government; for military, law enforcement and fire protection; for family life; for education; for the media; and for business and the economy.

This year’s theme is “One Voice, United in Prayer,” based on Romans 15:6.

The National Day of Prayer was established as an annual event in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman, according to the website nationaldayofprayer.org.

“The observance of the National Day of Prayer is founded on the constitutional rights of freedom of speech and freedom of religion and can be celebrated by all Americans,” the website said.
