The Colquitt County boys soccer team broke a 0-0 halftime tie with a pair of second-half goals to defeat Lee County 2-0 in a preseason scrimmage at Packer Park.

The Colquitt County girls dropped their scrimmage 5-1 to the Lady Trojans.

The Packers did not have their full complement of players until the second half and that was when their depth began to show.

Jason Nunez score the first goal of the match just 2:21 into the second half and the Packers then made it difficult for the Trojans to get back in it.

“Possession, possession, possession … that’s our game,” Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis said. “And wepossessed the ball real well, especially when we had most of our starters in in the second half.”

Maca Aguilera added the other goal with 9:49 remaining. The Packers also had two shots hit the cross bar.

The Colquitt County boys played without starter Francisco Gomez, who was unavailable, and Brian Vidales, who is on crutches.

Jarvis said he brought up Will Barber from the junior varsity, expecting to use him only in the first half.

But the young player performed well enough to see some time on the field in the second half as well, Jarvis said.

The Colquitt County girls soccer team also was short-handed on a soggy Saturday morning.

“We moved a lot of people around,” Lady Packers coach Andy Chapura said. “This is a young team and so inexperienced.

“But a scrimmage helps know what our weaknesses are. I feel happy with what I saw today.”

Chapura said he was especially pleased with the play of Amber Kling, who is taking over the role as sweeper.

“That’s why she’s our team captain,” Chapura said.

The combination of Taylor Page and Aubrey Norris played well and combined to score the Lady Packers only goal.

Page got the goal and Norris the assist.

“Taylor is just what we are looking for up top,” Chapura said.

The second-year coach also said he was pleased with the play of Diana Durham on the outside.

The Colquitt County soccer teams open the regular season on Tuesday when Thomasville visits Packer Park.

The girls game will start at 6 p.m. with the boys game to follow at about 8 p.m.

The Lady Packers and Packers will travel to Thomasville to take on Thomas County Central next Friday. The first region games are set for Feb. 25 at Lowndes.
