MOULTRIE — Police are investigating a reported Sunday night shooting in which a man reported someone in a car behind him opened fire in an area of Moultrie where several other shootings have occurred this year.

A 2010 Mercedes Benz SUV was struck at least once in the trunk in the latest incident, Moultrie Police Department Inv. Raul Leal said Tuesday.

Rodney James, 31, told police that the shooting happened near the intersection of Third Street and Sixth Avenue Southeast.

“He (reported) he was traveling north on Third,” Leal said. “He noticed this vehicle was behind him. Someone in the vehicle just started shooting.”

After police were called to investigate shots fired in the area, James called 911 and said he was in the 200 block of Hillcrest Avenue, police reports said.

Leal said police had no reason at this time to link the shooting to other recent violence in Moultrie that included a fatal shooting on Jan. 10 in the 800 block of Eighth Avenue Southeast.

Since that incident a second man was shot in the chest but was not seriously injured.

In that incident the victim reported that the second shooting occurred at Woodmen of the World Park, but police said that witnesses and police in the park area at the time did not hear any shots.

Police think that the shooting occurred somewhere else and that the victim was refusing to cooperate.

Two other shooting incidents were reported in Southeast Moultrie in the days following the fatal shooting of Danny D. Hill on Jan. 10.

Bonnie Lee Lewis, 31, and Socorre Larry Davis, 38, have each been charged with murder in connection with Hill’s death.
