Future Forecasters

Weather is one of the science standards for Georgia fourth graders. So when Cheryl Lawson heard about a contest on weather, she thought it would be interesting for the students. Students in her fourth grade science class wrote essays on ‘What weather means to me.’ As a result, several students earned a chance to shadow meteorologist Mike Morrison at FOX 31 News in Albany. Students and their parents were given a tour of the news station and instructed on how to deliver a weather forecast. After a little practice, armed with their new training, they were given a 30-second segment for weather on the news program. The winners are, from left, Michael Henry, Mitchell Wingate, Jake Tucker, Alyson Scroggins, Sam Sellers and Thomas Ponder, as well as Tatiana Harrison, who isn’t in the photo. Videos of the segments can be viewed by going to www.mysouthwestga.com, click on contests and official rules for Future Forecasters or www.youtube.com. The project is sponsored by the McDonalds Corporation in conjunction with FOX 31.
