FFA student wins floriculture event at Ga. National Fair

Recently, several Colquitt County FFA students competed at the Perry Fair in the Horticulture Identification Contests.

Competing in the Nursery Landscape competition was Mikayla Crews, Cody Williams, Brenin Davis, Trey Daniels, John Morris, Danyela Salas, Grace Bradley, and Nita Burkett. Competing in the Floriculture competition was Mikayla Crews, Cody Williams, Eugene Anderson, Celeste Rojo, Alana Sloan, Danyela Salas, Sara Jenkins, and Nita Burkett.

Mikayla Crews earned top honors in the Floriculture competition by placing first overall in the Horticulture identification division. Danyala Salas earned 4th place overall in the Floriculture competition.

“This was an excellent accomplishment since the students were competing with over 200 students,” said CCHS ag teacher Adrienne Smith. “The students will advance on to compete in the Albany Fair competition.”

Additionally, six students competed in the Floral Design competition. Kali Summerlin and Brooke Porter both competed in the live floral competition, both earning second place ribbons. Brenda Brooks, Brittany Martin, Linzee Rehberg, and Kylie Varnadoe competed in the Silk Floral Design Competition and all earned ribbons for their efforts.

Several students also competed with Agricultural mini-booths that are aimed at teaching a concept related to agriculture, horticulture, and forestry. Katie Russell, Elizabeth Horne, Elizabeth Beacham, Cody Williams, Meredith Fuller, Josie Johnson, Alexis Radcliff, and Caitlyn Meadows all completed mini-booth projects that represented Colquitt County in the Perry     Fair.

Jaimee Burt, Elizabeth Beacham, and Karli Parker, all currently serving the Soutwest Region of Georgia as Area FFA Officers, also helped to facilitate the FFA Middle School Day at the Fair where several hundred middle school FFA members from all over Georgia come to learn more about FFA opportunities. The students prepared booths teaching the students about all the areas in FFA in which they could become involved.
