Colquitt County broke open a close game with 21 unanswered third-quarter points and defeated Brunswick 41-16 on Friday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

The victory raises the Packers record to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Region 1-AAAAAA standings.

Colquitt County and Camden County, which was off on Friday, are tied atop the region standings with 3-0 records.

Lowndes, with a 35-10 victory over Coffee on Friday, is third in region at 3-1.

No one else has a winning record. Brunswick is 1-2 as is Valdosta, which defeated Tift County 31-21 on Friday. Tift County is 1-3 and Coffee is 0-4.

The Packers will play host to Valdosta next Friday while Tift County goes to Lowndes and Camden County travels to Brunswick.

Colquitt County quarterback Daniel Mobley completed 13-of-25 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns as the Packers won their fifth straight game. He also had two possible touchdown passes dropped in the end zone.

Kiel Pollard, who dropped those two passes, redeemed himself by catching five passes for 111 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns.

Todd Boyd, who had missed the most of the game against Lowndes and all of the game against Tift County, had a touchdown reception as did Tim Sanders.

The touchdown catches were the first of the season for both Boyd and Sanders.

Sihiem King got the Packers first score rushed for 128 yards and Jose Vega added field goals of 23 and 48 yards.

Colquitt led 17-8 at the half, but it was two quarters of missed opportunities fort the Packers.

Two potential touchdown passes were dropped in the end zone and the Packers fumbled the ball away on the Brunswick 13.

Colquitt forced Brunswick to punt away its first possession then drove 58 yards on 12 plays to score on a 7-yard run by King with 7:01 left in the first quarter.

The Packers banged out four first downs on the drive and then had three more on its next possession when they drove to the fourth-and-3 at the Brunswick 15.

The Packers sent out Jose Vega to attempt a 32-yard field goal, but Brunswick called a timeout.

During the timeout, Packers coach Rush Propst changed his mind and sent his offense back on to the field.

Mobley then fired to a slanting Pollard in the end zone, but the sophomore receiver could not hold on and the ball went over to the Pirates.

Brunswick was unable to move after taking over on the 15 and after a 10-yard punt the Packers took possession on the Pirates 39.

Mobley appeared to have laid another potential touchdown pass into the hands of Pollard on third-and-six, but again Pollard was unable to hold on.

Vega came on and kicked a 23-yard field goal to put the Packers up 10-0 with 10:54 left in the half.

Brunswick took the ensuing kickoff and drove for its only score of the first half, going 70 yards in 11 plays with Ishaun Armstrong taking the ball in from 10 yards out.

Quarterback Cory Dixon ran in the 2-point conversion and the Packers lead was trimmed to 10-8.

When Maleek Lewis returned the kickoff 41 yards to the Packers 48, Colquitt was on the march again.

The first play in the drive was a 19-yard completion from Mobley to Sanders and the final play was a 12-yard strike from Mobley to Sanders for the touchdown. Vega’s conversion put the Packers up 17-8.

Colquitt drove one more time in the second quarter, but on a first-and-10 from the Pirates 13, a botched handoff put the ball on the ground and Brunswick recovered with 48 seconds left in the half.

The Packers stopped Brunswick’s second possession when Michael Sutton picked off a Dixon pass in the end zone with 4:41 left in the first half.

It was Colquitt County’s first interception since the season-opening 21-6 victory over Grayson.

Mobley put the game away in the third quarter with touchdown passes of 10 yards to Boyd and 23 and 10 yards to Pollard.

Sanders got his biggest offensive workload of the season and responded by catching four passes for 58 yards and a score and carrying twice from scrimmage for six yards.

The Packers starting defense allowed just the second quarter touchdown by Armstrong.

The other Brunswick touchdown came in the fourth quarter, which was played under a running clock after Colquitt lead 38-8 after three quarters. It came on a tipped touchdown pass from Dixon to A.J. Jackson.

Dixon, who had 378 yards of offense against the Packers last year, was sacked six times and was held to 30 yards rushing and 125 yards passing.
