Deputy: Driver ‘borrowed’ forklift after wrecking in ditch

Published 10:48 pm Saturday, September 14, 2013

A Colquitt County man wrecked his SUV on Newton Road Thursday morning, but law enforcement officers say it was his actions afterwards that really got him in trouble.

A witness said George Antonio Mendez, 30, 136 Dean Matthews Road, was driving the 2006 NIssan Pathfinder in the 500 block of Newton Road around 9:30 a.m. when he ran into a ditch and couldn’t get it out.

When a deputy arrived to investigate, he found a forklift in the ditch with the vehicle. The witness said Mendez had used the forklift to try to get the SUV out.

The deputy asked Mendez where he got the forklift from. He pointed to 575 Newton Road and said a lady there said he could use it. The deputy telephoned the homeowner, Chet Ray, who said no one was at the house at that time.

The deputy examined the SUV and found the forklift’s left tire had pierced the back door of the Nissan and the vehicles were stuck together. Davis Towing separated them, and the deputy saw the right wheel was bent. Ray told him that the last time he had used it, the tires were straight.

The Georgia State Patrol, which investigated the wreck itself, charged Mendez with driving under the influence, driving without a license, leaving the scene of an accident, no insurance, open container, seat belt violation (adults) and failure to drive in a single lane. The sheriff’s office is investigating to see whether other charges would also apply.

• Two men filed a total of three reports last week alleging someone at Northgate Apartments, 1515 Fourth Ave. N.E., was firing a BB gun at cars on the street.

Nathan Slaughter, 1400 block Fourth Avenue Northeast, told police Tuesday he heard what seemed to be a BB gun as he drove by the front of the apartment complex about 10 p.m. then heard something hit his 2001 Ford Super Duty truck. He said he did not see the shooter, even after he turned the truck around to look for them. Damage was estimated at less than $500, police said.

The next night, Michael Alligood, address unknown, said about two days before he heard a popping noise like a BB gun as he was driving past Northgate Apartments. He found a dent on his door afterwards. Alligood filed the report Wednesday because he had the same experience that night, too.

Alligood said he heard the same popping noise and when he looked at Northgate Apartments he saw two people under a tree with a pellet gun. The officer walked through the apartment complex but did not find anything out of the ordinary.

About 10 p.m. Thursday, Slaughter called police again because he saw juveniles shooting a BB gun at passing vehicles from a ditch in front of the apartments. Police responded, but the officer didn’t indicate that he found anything when he arrived.
