Propst: Offensive line a work in progress

- Rising senior Gabe Mobley, shown blocking Di Slaughter (40) at a recent practice, is moving from right tackle to center this season. Mobley, who has split time between the baseball and football teams over the last week, is the most experience member of the offensive line.
One of Colquitt County’s goals for spring practice was start rebuilding the offensive line.

That task is coming along slowly, Packers coach Rush Prospt said on Wednesday.
“It’s a work in progress,” he said. “It’s the biggest question mark we have.
“We’re not where we want to be there yet.”
Only one full-time starter returns as the Packers lost seniors Octavius Jackson, Dalton Dillon, Jeffrey Davis and Travis Register.
Gabe Mobley, who started at right tackle last season, has moved to center. He is drawing attention of recruiters.
Alfred Brown and Brandon Cope are the leading candidates to handle the tackle positions.

Cade Blackburn, who had several starts last year as a sophomore, is a likely starter at one guard.
Clay Hawkins has been moved to offense and is battling to take over the other guard spot.
Also working for snaps are Tyrell Cheevers, Micah Edwards, Logan Moody and Austin Kinard.
That group has “a long ways to go,” Propst said.
The offensive line is being coached by Joey Bennett. Propst said he is trying to hire another coach to work with Bennett and also handle the tight ends and fullbacks.
Another area the Packers have to rebuild is special teams.
Gone are three-year starting snapper Carter Jones, holder and punter Tyler Yost and place-kickers Will Bannister and Roberto Vega.
Propst said rising sophomore receiver Kiel Pollard is getting a long look at snapper.
Rising senior receiver Andy Bush is expected to be the punter. Jose Vega is performing well as both the place-kicker and kickoff specialist.
Ryan Pipkin and rising sophomore quarterback Chase Parrish are holder possibilities.
Propst said on Wednesday that he has been overall pleased with the 2013 team’s progress so far, but added that Wednesday and Thursday’s practices “will start to show what this team’s about.”
The Packers will practice at 5:45 a.m. today at the high school and will scrimmage at 10 a.m. Saturday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
The team will practice on Monday and Tuesday at the practice field and will hold another scrimmage at 6 p.m. Thursday at the practice field for the final spring session.
Four members of the Colquitt County baseball team are rejoining football practice after the Diamond Packers were eliminated from the state playoffs on Tuesday at Parkview.
Returning to the football team are Gabe Mobley, quarterback Daniel Mobley, receiver/punter Andy Bush and receiver Ryan Pipkin.
Daniel Mobley, who underwent shoulder surgery after last season, is still limited in what he can do, but he is expected to increase his weight training next week and should be able to practice with no limitations by July 8, Propst said.
The Packers appear to be solid defensively, especially with the addition of defensive back C.J. Johnson, who played at Coffee last year.
Johnson, transferred last to Colquitt County last winter, is projected to play the “star” position, which Propst said is a hybrid strong safety-outside linebacker-strong side linebacker.
He also could play safety, where returners Tim Sanders and O’Shay Williams are holding on to their starting jobs.
“O’Shay is a little undersized, but we can’t get him off the field,” Propst said.
Michael Sutton and Quan Patillo are getting most of the snaps with the first team, with Taif Smith also getting plenty of work.
Propst said Javonta Woods, a starter in the offensive backfield, will get some looks in the secondary next week as the team continues to look for depth.
The linebacking corps appears deep with returning starters Brandon Key and Bull Barge working inside.
Quinton Hampton is playing a defensive end-”jack” linebacker position.
Tomarcio Reese also will see plenty of playing time.
I-Key Pinkins and Alex Williams are also playing the defensive end positions. Rising freshman Demetrius Walker has been impressive, Propst said.
Veterans Jamiyus Pittman and Michael Parrish are holding down the tackle positions.
Depth is lacking there this spring with Ta’Phari Wright ineligible. Propst said he hoped to have Wright back for the coming season.
Di Slaughter has been playing on the defensive line and also on offense at tight end.
And while he likes the makeup of the Packers defense, the backups are primarily “young pups,” Propst said.
