Packer football team honored at banquet

The players who led the Packers to their fourth straight appearance in the state semifinals in the Georgia’s highest classification were honored on Wednesday at Colquitt County High’s annual football banquet, held at the Charlie A. Gray Junior High cafeteria.
A number of individual awards were presented and the team’s All-Region 1-AAAAAA and All-State selections were honored.
Rocky Jones Strong Man Award was established in 2005 in memory of former Colquitt County offensive lineman and longtime supporter of Packer athletics and youth sports Rocky Jones.
The award went to linebacker Brandon Key.
Dale Williams Community Service Award was established 2010 by Dale Williams, the starting quarterback in 1967-1968 at William Bryant High, where he was captain of the team. He received a football scholarship to Albany State University and is member of the Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame. The awards were presented to D. J. Johnson and Latraveus Turner.
Ralph Taylor Special Teams Award was established 2006 in honor of Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame member Ralph Taylor, who the head football coach at William Bryant High 1966-1970, posting a record of 35-6-1 ). The awards went to Will Bannister and Tyler Yost.
Friedlander Family Boar Hog Award was established 1968 and goes to the player who exhibits toughness and dedication on defensive side of the ball. The award went to John Gray.
Colquitt County High School Academic Awards went to 18 players who maintained an average of 89.5 or above.
Those awards went to Will Bannister, Dillon Frazier, Hudson May, Garrett May, Austin Hunnicutt, Britt Jones, Chase Parrish, Gabe Mobley, Daniel Mobley, Adam Webb, Alex Williams, Micah Edwards, Quintin Hampton, Jamal Phillips, Cole Segraves, Cade Blackburn, Jeffery Davis and De’themyus “Bull” Barge.
The Board of Education Academic Award was presented to the three athletes who continue to maintain excellence in the classroom as well as on the football field. The awards went to Will Bannister, Dillon Frazier and Britt Jones.
Charles Taylor Pippen Unsung Hero Award is presented in memory of Charlie Pippen, a three-year starting quarterback for the Moultrie Packers who played at the University of Florida. He was killed in a car wreck in 1970 at age 25.
The awards were presented to Jeffrey Davis and Garrett Pearce.
Virgil Seay Special Teams Award was presented in honor the former Moultrie Packer who went on to play at Troy State and in the National Football League for the Washington Redskins and Atlanta Falcons.
The awards went to Bull Barge, Javonta Woods and Tomarcio Reese.
The Tom White Scrambler Award is presented in memory of the longtime was assistant football coach and Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame member. The awards went to Kishawn Taylor and John Boatwright.
Virgil “Bud” Willis Character Award, established 2006, is presented in honor of the Moultrie High head football coach from 1965-1977 who posted a career record of 93-34-1. It went to Travis Register.
William “Knuck” McCrary Fighting Spirit is presented in the memory of Moultrie High Packers head coach from 1951-1965. He is a member of the Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame. Receiving the awards were Octavius Jackson and Carlos Johnson.
George A. Horkan Sportsmanship Award was first presented in 1956 by Judge George A. Horkan Jr. in honor of his father. This year’s recipients are Ikeem Blakely and Nate Madison.
Ray Goff Top Gun Award, established 2009, is presented in honor of the former Packer who a Parade Magazine All-American, played football at Georgia and was Bulldogs head coach. The recipient for 2012 is Bobby Hill.
The “Mr. Dependable” Award, established 2011 by Jimmy Jeter, went to snapper Britt Jones.
Lavasky King “Packer Pride” award goes to the most improved players. The award was established in 2011 in memory of the outstanding running back on the 1994 state championship team who was killed in 1995. Receiving the awards were Jeffrey Lawson and Gabe Mobley.
Bobby Cobb True Grit Award was established in 2011. It goes this year to Dalton Dillon and Johnny Ward.
Dextra Polite “Ultimate Competitor” Award was established this year in honor of current Packers defensive backs coach and Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame member Dextra Polite. The award this year goes to Cole Segraves.
Coaches Shawn Sutton and Zach Grage to present the following scout team awards to
Alex Williams, Zamious Bonner, Hudson May, Marquan Greene, Ricky Dunbar, Logan Moody, Alfred Brown, Austin Kinard, Dee Williams and Sam Holloway.
The Offensive Junior Leadership of the Year Awards went to Todd Boyd, Daniel Mobley, Gabe Mobley, Mike Parrish, Jamyius Pittman, O’Shay Williams, Tim Sanders and Brandon Key.
The Packers captains — John Gray, Octavius Jackson, Travis Register, Cole Segraves and Johnny Ward — received plaques.
Also honored were John Gray, Octavius Jackson and Bobby Hill for being named All-State.
The Packers All-Region 1-AAAAAA players – Octavius Jackson, Jamiyus Pittman, John Gray, Johnny Ward, Cole Segraves, Bobby Hill, Travis Register, John Boatwright, Dalton Dillon, Todd Boyd, Brandon Key and Tyler Yost – also were recognized.
Packer trainer Ryan Kebler introduced his staff of Itianna Smith, Jose Santos, Anna Fischer, Tay Thomas, Hunter Kebler and Harrison Kebler and recognized Drs. Kevin Collins and Gary Swartzentruber.
Kebler also thanked Marcus Wells, Beth Barker, Trina Sasine and Jim Matney of Colquitt Regional Medical Center for their contributions to the health of the Packer football team.
