Moultrie police are seeking a man who ran from officers who were trying to arrest him Thursday night on suspicion of drunken driving.
Police who approached a 2005 Dodge Durango at 7:31 p.m. in the walking trail parking lot at the intersection of South Main Street and Lower Meigs Road found the man in the truck with a woman.
When the officer approached the truck, Luis Alberto Velazavez Lopez smelled of alcohol and told him that the woman drove them to the parking lot before they switched seats.
Told that there was a surveillance camera covering the parking lot, the woman told the officer she could not go to jail and that Lopez had picked her up at Moultrie Technical College. Lopez also admitted to driving when told about the camera.
Lopez, who was unsteady on his feet when he got out of the truck, failed three field sobriety tests, police said, and when officers moved to handcuff him he asked whether they were arresting him. When told they were, Lopez ran north on the trail before running into thick bushes, where he was able to elude the two pursuing officers.
Using the name and date of birth found on a pawn ticket in the truck, found hat Lopez previously had been arrested. He was positively identified by the jail booking photo, police said.
An open can of beer was found in the truck, police said.
Arrest warrants were taken for Lopez, 30, of Berlin on charges of no driver’s license, open container violation and failure to obey officer.
