A pair accused of trying to sell stolen jewelry were turned away by a Moultrie shop because they failed to bring identification, but officers were waiting when they returned to the business later.

When Patches Marie Branson and Shannon Dale Partain showed up for the second time on Tuesday, the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office had set up surveillance at Moultrie Gold Buyers, where their initial effort to sell jewelry was unsuccessful.

The agency was tipped off by the business, sheriff’s Inv. Mike Murfin said Thursday.

Branson, 34, 118 N. Pine Drive, and Partain, 37, 730-A Shade Murphy Road, are accused in an Oct. 22 burglary of a Hartsfield home from which property worth nearly $14,000 was reported stolen.

After the burglary, pawn shops and gold purchasers were notified of the property that had been stolen, Murfin said. On Tuesday, he said, the two suspects showed up at one of those businesses looking to sell some of the loot, and both were actually wearing some of the jewelry.

“Moultrie Gold Buyers was looking for the stuff, and it came in on the 30th,” he said. “Patches Branson and Shannon Partain did not have ID. They left the gold while they went to get the proper ID. Lo and behold, they returned to complete the transaction.”

The investigation was aided by neighbors who saw a gray Jeep Cherokee in the area on the day of the burglary at the Georgia Highway 37 West residence of Earl and Daphne Majors, Murfin said. Branson drives a vehicle matching that description.

“Every item brought into (Moultrie Gold Buyers) has been positively identified as being taken in the burglary,” he said. “Partain and Branson also were wearing jewelry items that were positively identified as coming from the burglary of the Majors’ residence.”

The jewelry is the only property that has been recovered. Other items reported stolen included two digital cameras, a flip phone, Wii and PlayStation video game systems and more than 30 games for each, three DVD players, a plastic jug containing cash, television, two laptop computers, archery equipment and seven guns.

Murfin said it is possible that there could be other arrests in the case. He asked that anyone with information contact the sheriff’s office at (229) 616-7430.

Branson and Partain have each been charged with one count of burglary.

Branson also was charged with possession of methamphetamine. Sheriff’s reports said that officers found a small amount of methamphetamine on her when she was searched following the arrest.
