- Colquitt County’s Cheyenne Tillman (5), and Amber Kling celebrate after scoring first-inning runs.
Shelby Rakestraw missed a home run by inches in the third inning of Colquitt County 12-0 run-rule victory over Worth County on Wednesday at Packer Park when her drive struck the top of the fence, then bounded back into play.
She ended up with a run-scoring double, but her homer was yet to come.
In the bottom of the fourth, with the Lady Packers leading by nine and needed three runs to call the game, the Lady Packers first baseman struck again.
This time her liner got by the Lady Rams right fielder and by the time the ball got back to the infield, Rakestraw had the homer she missed out on the inning before.
And this one enabled the Lady Packers to walk off with with their third win in a row, one that raised their record to 10-10.
“It was good to see her hit the ball,” Colquitt County assistant coach John Phillips said of Rakestraw, who was 2-for-2 with a walk and four runs batted in.
“We need her to hit for us.”
Colquitt County now has battered Worth County twice this season.
The Lady Packers won 20-1 in Sylvester in their season opener.
On Wednesday, Worth had no chance against Colquitt County’s Ainsley Davis.
The junior right-hander faced just one batter over the minimum in four innings of work.
Abby Thompson got a solid single to left with one-out in the second, but quickly forced at second for the second out.
Davis then fanned Brittany Pittman and struck out the side in the third.
Davis retired the Lady Rams on two grounders and a pop up in fifth inning.
She finished with six strikeouts.
Colquitt scored two runs in the bottom of the first, rallying with two out.
Cheyenne Tillman singled to left and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Davis reached on an error and Amber Kling ran for her.
Kling and Tillman pulled off a double steal and Kling scored from second when the throw from the catcher ended up in center field.
Colquitt doubled its lead in the second when Kasie Ricks’s two-out double scored Kayla Bynum and Shameka Reynolds.
After scoring four runs on just two hits in the first two innings, the Lady Packers began to hit with more authority in the third.
Davis got a one-out single to left and Cheyenne Sumner reach on a fielder’s choice.
Rakestraw followed with the drive that struck the fence and resulted in a double scoring Sumner.
Rakestraw’s hit was the first of four in a row. Kayla Bynum followed with a double to score Rakestraw and Reynolds singled in Ashleigh Childs, who ran for Bynum, the Lady Packers catcher. Diana Durham then tripled to center field, driving in Reynolds and giving the Lady Packers the 9-0 lead.
Taylor Owens opened the bottom of the Colquitt County fourth with a line-drive base hit to left.
On out later Davis reached on an error. Two batters later, Rakestraw’s liner to right got to fence and the Lady Packers had the victory.
“I thought we adjusted to their pitcher,” said coach Carman Phillips, adding that she was especially pleased with the four straight hits in the third inning.
The Lady Packers will be off until next Tuesday when they travel to Tifton to meet region-leading Tift County.
The Lady Devils are 6-0 in the region.
“Next Tuesday’s are two big games,” said Carman Phillips, whose team is 3-3 in the region.
