Valdosta and Jefferson County also are unbeaten in the 12-team tournament, which will continue today at 9 a.m.

The Wildcats are 5-0 with just one pool play game remaining today. Colquitt and Jefferson are each 4-0.

“You’re 4-0 so you’ve got to be pleased,” Packer coach Rush Propst said. “But when the tournament starts (at 11:30 a.m. today), we’ll see where we go from there.”

Colquitt County’s B team is 0-4.

The Packers A team opened with a 27-17 victory over Laney High with Cole Segraves at quarterback.

In the second game, Daniel Mobley went out with the first team at led the Packers to 32-10 victory over Ware County.

Colquitt also beat defending champion North Florida Christian 41-12 and Worth County 37-12.

The Packers will conclude pool play with a game against Jefferson at 9 this morning and against Eufaula at 10 a.m.

Colquitt had little trouble with Laney in its opener.

Segraves completed 11-of-24 passes with two touchdown strikes to Todd Boyd and another to Dillon Frazier.

Kishaun Taylor led the Packers with three receptions.

In addition to his two pass receptions against Laney, Bobby Hill also came up with an interception in the game.

Propst has indicated that Hill, who has committed to Ole Miss as a cornerback, will get some playing time in the secondary along with starting at wide receiver.

Mobley was sharp in the Packers’ victory over Ware County.

The rising junior connected on 14 of his 18 passes and threw scoring passes to Hill, John Boatwright, Tim Sanders and Javonta Woods.

Mobley also completed an extra point pass to Taylor.

Sanders, Woods, Hill, Frazier, Johnson, Maleek Lewis and Andy Bush each had two receptions against Ware County.

The Gators had two former Packer assistants — Jimmy Francis and Paul Callahan — on their sideline.

Packers offensive coordinator Jeff Hammond was pleased he was able to get so many players on the field.

“We’re going to play 10 receivers and two quarterbacks,” Hammond said. “But we need someone to step up and be a playmaker for us.”

Hammond said he expects the Packers to operate their offense much faster this year.

Instead of the 65 snaps a game the team averaged last year, he hopes to get that number up to 85 snaps.

“We want to get back to the 2010 mode,” he said. “But we still want to be able to play power football.”

Hammond will closely monitor the play of his quarterbacks throughout the tournament and continues to express confidence in both Segraves, the senior, and Mobley, who is a junior.

“I think we’ve got two quarterbacks we can win with for the first time since we’ve been here,” Hammond said.

“And that’s a comforting feeling.”

The standings after the first day of pool play includes Valdosta, 5-0; Colquitt County A,  4-0; Jefferson County, 4-0; Eufaula (Ala.), 3-1; Warren Central, 2-2; North Florida Christian, 2-3; Episcopal of Jacksonville, Fla., 2-3; Laney, 1-3; Ware County, 1-3; Worth County, 1-3; Houston County, 1-3; and Colquitt County B, 0-4.

Warren Central traveled down from Indiana to take part in the tournament.
