8-and-under boys all-stars fall, will meet each other today

Abraham Daniels had a base hit and an RBI in Colquitt County Gold’s 10-7 loss to Vidalia on Thursday in the GRPA state tournament at the Magnolia Sports Complex.

 Colquitt County’s two 8-and-under all-star teams were looking forward to facing each other today in the GRPA state baseball tournament being held at the Magnolia Sports Complex.

Unfortunately, they will be meeting a losers’ bracket game at 10 a.m. today rather than being undefeated in an 11:30 a.m. game.

Colquitt County Gold let a 6-5 third-inning lead slip away and fell to Vidalia 10-7 in its tournament opener.

Colquitt County Black also had an early lead, but its 2-0 advantage was trumped by a five-run third inning by Summerville, which went on to win 9-3.

The two Colquitt County teams will face off at 10 this morning, with the loser being eliminated.

Summerville and Vidalia will meet at 11:30 this morning in one winners’ bracket game.

Rincon and Washington County will play in the other. Rincon sent Thomasville to losers’ bracket with a 10-1 win on Thursday. Washington County blanked Calhoun 12-0.

Thomasville and Calhoun will square off in the other losers’ bracket game at 10 this morning.

Colquitt County Gold trailed quickly as Vidalia scored a pair of runs in the top of the first.

Matt Bell doubled in Jordan Walden, who had led off the game with a single to left. Bell later scored on a base hit by Karson Evans.

Colquitt tied the game in the bottom of the first with a pair of two-out runs.

After the first two batters were retired, Henry Underwood singled to left and scooted home on a double by Gavin Steptoe.

Chasyn Miley followed with a single to score Steptoe to tie the game.

Singles by Ben Beverly, Walker Moncus, Conner Coleman and Brye Markey and an error led to three Vidalia runs in the top of the second.

In the bottom of the second, Drew Johnson and Davis Dalton singled and Nathan Harden got a two-out hit to score Johnson.

Colquitt got its first lead in the bottom of third, scoring three times.

Cannon Whatley and Underwood singled to open the inning and Steptoe forced Underwood with Whatley taking third.

Miley singled in Whatley and one out later Abraham Daniels singled in Steptoe to tie the game.

Jace Autrey followed with a base hit to put Colquitt County up 6-5.

But Vidalia matched that with three of its own in the top of the fourth, all coming with two out.

Kevin Cox, who went 4-for-4, singled in two runs to put Vidalia back in the lead and Karson Evans, who had three hits, following with another run-scoring base hit.

Colquitt got a single run in the bottom of the fourth when Hayden Moore’s ground out drove in Jayden Weaver, who had singled.

But Colquitt squandered two hits in the fifth inning and went down in order in sixth.

Vidalia padded its lead with a pair of sixth-inning runs.

Bell and Ty Dalley led off the sixth with singles and Cox got a base hit to score Bell.

Dalley scored Beverly’s ground out.

Underwood led Colquitt County with three hits, including a double.

Steptoe, Miley and Dalton each had two hits. Whatley, Autrey, Johnson, Weaver, Landon Griffin and Abraham Daniels each had one hit.

Colquitt County Black scored two runs in the second and another in the third, but was unable to score and mount a comeback over the final three innings against Summerville.

After its five-run third, Summerville add two runs in fifth and two more in the sixth.

Cannon Whatley, Will Snipes, Landon Norman and Cameron Summerlin each had two hits for Colquitt County Black.

Zane Touchton, Steven Spradley, Hayes Lightsey, Jesse McMurphy and Parker Bruce each had one hit.
