Don’t know why

“I don’t know why anyone would want to be president. If you stick to your party beliefs, you are accused of not working with congress. If you compromise to get things done, you are accused of being weak. American’s believe everything they see on tv and repeat stupidity until they think it is the truth.”

Keystone issue

“I think you’re right, there are more questions about the oil issues than there are answers … at least for us consumers who indeed are held hostage. That whole Keystone thing was a joke. That oil will go somewhere else at the expense of endangering our environment. Those farm people in Nebraska decided it wasn’t worth the risk of endangering their livelihood.”

Personal choices

“How in the world do things like who marries who or who uses birth control get mixed up in politics? Those are personal choices and our government is supposed to be here to protect our rights to make those choices. NOT to force choices on us!”

Good point

“Mr. Walden, you made a very good point in Sunday’s column. We had nothing to do with being born who we are and where we are. We did not pick our parents, our race, our country or our socio-economic status. And unfortunately, there are those among us who were born on third base and think they hit a triple. And I agree, we can pretend to understand all those Mideast issues except to realize what fanaticism, particularly religious fanaticism, can cause in terms of carnage and otherwise civil unrest.”

Observation

“‘Christians’ in this country went to church and prayed that blacks would remain slaves, that women would learn their place and not try to vote, and now that gays will never have personal rights. Since God made all of us the way we are, wouldn’t it just be better if we lived our lives and stopped telling others what to do and how to think?”

I disagree

“Ranter, you are wrong. I have been a Christian since December 21, 1965 when I was baptized. AND I believe that gay people should have all the rights everyone else does including marriage. I try to live by the values that Jesus taught: kindness, tolerance, acceptance. And if you are going to pick out verses to quote to prove a point, how about the most important one: judge not that ye shall not be judged.”

In response

“In reference to yesterday’s rant about gays and Christians. Our definition of Christian basically comes from the New Testament and the ‘new covenant’ brought by Christ. Perhaps you didn’t notice but Christ did not theme any of his sermons or teachings with the gay ‘issue.’ He also did not declare that if you are a Democrat, then you obviously can’t be a Christian as some would argue.”
