Bowen Aguero shot a 79-80 for the Colquitt County High golf team in the Indian Invitational held Friday and Saturday in Vidalia.

Just who the contenders will be at the Region 1-AAAAA golf tournament is beginning to come into sharper focus.

Over the weekend, Coffee shot a 614 to finish second in the annual Indian Invitational in Vidalia and Colquitt County was third, eight shots back.

Lowndes was 33 shots behind the Packers. And Colquitt County will another close look at another contender, Tift County, when it plays in the Blue Devil Invitational at Spring Hill County Club on Monday.

The region tournament will be held Monday, April 23, at Sunset Country Club.

“If we play well and Coffee plays well, it should be between us,” said Packers coach Donald Dale after his team shot 305 on Friday and 317 on Saturday in Vidalia.

“And we’ll be playing at our home course, so we should play well.”

Actually, Dale is hoping his team plays some better than it did over the weekend, saying his team “hung in there.”

“On Friday, everybody had one really bad hole,” Dale said.

Colquitt’s 305 on Friday was just one shot back of Coffee.

But on Saturday, the Trojans shot 310. Colquitt had a 317.

Like the other teams in the tournament, the Packers had to deal with greens that were fast and, Dale said, “tricked up.”Of the six Packers who played in the two-day event, senior Von Stripling had the best outing, winning a playoff for the low medalist trophy after shooting a 74-71.

He won the playoff over Woodward Academy’s Cam Andrade, son of PGA Tour player Billy Andrade.

Dale said this was the first time Colquitt County has had the low medalist at the Vidalia tournament.

Lee Wright shot a 75 on Friday and an 83 on Saturday.

Bowen Aguero shot 79-80; Eli Stripling was 77-88; McKenzie Blanchett was 86-83; and Jordan Williams turned in an 87-88.

The team from Easley, S.C., won the tournament with a 604, shooting a 297 on Saturday and a 307 on Saturday.

Westminster No. 1 was fourth with 623 and Vestavia Hills of Alabama was fifth with a 626.

Woodward Academy, which shot 636 was seventh and was followed by Harrison, 639; Westminster No. 1, 643; Lowndes, 647; Dalton, 650; Oglethorpe County and Pierce County, 651; Savannah Christian 666; Wesleyan, 667; White County, 669; Thomas County Central, 672; Statesboro, 673; Holy Innocents, 685; Central (Ala.), 687; Vidalia No. 1, 704; Smiths Station (Ala.), 716; Richmond Hill, 730; Vidalia No. 2, 733; and Hardaway, 838.

After Monday’s Blue Devil Invitational, the Packers will have one more tuneup before the region tournament, meeting Lowndes at 4 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Country Club.

Also this week, the Colquitt County varsity girls will meet Tift County at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Spring Hill Country Club.

The Lady Packers also will go to play at Douglas Country Club on Monday, April 16.
