The Lady Packers fell 5-1 in Saturday’s first game to a Lee County team that has four players who have already signed to play at the college level

The Packers got two goals from Roberto Vega in the first 20 minutes of the match and cruised to a 4-0 halftime lead.

They added goals by Francisco Gomez, his second of the match, and Daniel Gonzalez in the second 40 minutes.

The keepers — Matthew Moody, Jose Vega and Will Pitts — completed the shutout.

“It was a fun day,” said Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis, on the boys sideline for the first after having coached the Colquitt County girls team for 14 seasons.

“I was pleased with how we played, especially in the first half. We moved the ball around and created some opportunities in the box.”

Jarvis said the Packers got away from their game a little in the second half.

“We were trying to send the ball over the top a lot,” Jarvis said. “That’s not what we want to do.”

Vega got the only goal the Packers would need with 28:09 left in the first half. It was unassisted.

He added his second 8 1/2 minutes later to put the Packers up 2-0. It also was unassisted.

Manuel Vasquez made it 3-0 on a goal with 11:44 left in the first half. Roberto Vega got the assist.

Gomez got the first of his two goals with 5:09 remaining to give Colquitt a 4-0 halftime lead. Elias Moreno got the assist.

Moreno also assisted on the second Gomez goal, which came with 26:53 left in the match.

Jorge Villalobos fed Gonzalez with a perfect cross to complete the scoring.

Jarvis like the play of Roberto Vega.

“His shots have a lot of movement,” Jarvis said. “And he’s a quiet leader for us. Even after the two goals, he didn’t boast. He’s very mature.”

Colquitt will be off until Thursday when Monroe High visits from Albany.

“We’ve got some things to work on and fix before then,” Jarvis said.

The Lee County girls scored on a goal by Jacksonville State (Ala.) signee Carsen Taylor just 3:05 into the match to take a quick lead.

The Lady Packers tied the score on a goal by sophomore midfielder Aubrey Norris with 6:48 left in the first half.

But it was all Lee County the rest of the way. The Lady Trojans added goals by Baylee Holbrook and Kaelyn Adcock in the final 3:02 of the first half to take a 3-1 lead into the break.

Lee County added goals by Alexis Roland and Josie Nix in the second half.

First-year head coach Andy Chapura Lee County was able to capitalize on the mistakes his team made.

“It was small mistakes here and there,” Chapura said. “They were a good team.”

The margin could have been greater but for a fine performance in the nets by freshman Christin Hunnicutt.

She was filling in for Natalie Griffin, who is still playing basketball, and Christy Crosby, who is injured and was credited with 20 saves.

It was Hunnicutt’s first time to play keeper.

“I was very impressed,” Chapura said. “She handled herself real well for her first time.”

The Lady Packers will play their season-opener at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Monroe at Packer Park.

At 5:20 p.m., there will be a ceremony held honoring the memory of Madison Sumner, a sophomore midfielder on the 2012 Colquitt County girls soccer team who will killed in a car wreck with classmate Mary Holt Statom on Sept. 22.

A plaque in Sumner’s honor will be placed on side of soccer field house.

Sumner was the second former Lady Packers killed in a 15-month period.

Sha Wetherington died in a one-car crash in June 2011.

Sumner’s plaque will be mounted along side one dedicated to Wetherington’s memory.
