An offer for a new central air unit that seems too good to be true could be due to the cooling units being hot — as in stolen — the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office warned.

Four new central units were stolen Friday from a storage unit in the 1200 block of US. Highway 319 North, sheriff’s reports said.

The thief or thieves broke into two storage units, taking nothing from one but making off with the air conditioners in a unit rented by William Bass of the 1300 block of U.S. Highway 319.

The offender or offenders may try to sell the items,” sheriff’s investigator Shawn Bostick said. “We’re asking the public to report if they’re approached by someone trying to sell central air units if they are not in that business.”

Scrap metal buyers in the area also have been alerted to the theft and are looking out for the air conditioners.

If sold for scrap they would only be worth about $50 apiece, but could be sold for much more as functioning units, Bostick said.
