The Northwest Moultrie pool had been closed since Terrence Gibson, 5, nearly drowned in the pool June 9. Gibson has recovered from the incident, but an investigation into the incident and safety procedures prompted the pool’s closing.
In a statement, Recreation Department Director Terry Peek said the investigation of the incident has been completed by state and local officials. The Georgia Department of Health, the Local Government Risk Management Services and the City of Moultrie Police Department have all cleared the pool to re-open to the public.
“Evaluations by these agencies of the Northwest and Southwest pool facilities concluded that both meet or exceed pool safety and operations guidelines as outlined by the State of Georgia,” Peek said. “With this in mind, the Northwest pool will re-open to the public Friday, June 17, at 1 p.m. We regret any inconvenience this voluntary closing has caused as we re-evaluated our aquatic facilities, pool operations and safety protocol to assure safe recreation pools for the citizens of Colquitt County to enjoy.”
The Southwest Moultrie pool was closed following the near-drowning at the Northwest pool, but it reopened two days later.
Unrelated to the investigation, the Southwest Moultrie pool will be closed today, June 17, and Saturday, June 18, for the Georgia Games Moultrie Invitational Swim Meet.
