Floor hockey team wins tournament in New York City

The Colquitt County Special Olympics senior traditional floor hockey team won all four of its games to clalim the gold medal in the 2011 Peter Aquilone Memorial floor hockey tournament held Jan. 14-15 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.

Colquitt County opened with a pair of shutouts in pool play, defeating the Long Island, N.Y., Lions and Norwalk, Conn., both by 2-0 scores.

In Round 3, Colquitt County got its third straight shutout, blanking Norwalk again, this time by a 10-0 score.

In the championship game, Colquitt County faced defending 2009 World Games champion Northeast Westchester and took the gold medal, winning 3-2 in sudden death overtime.

The tournament drew 14 teams from the East Coast.

Team members are James Montgomery, Kelvn Holmes, J.B. Barnett, Donta Merritt, Avery Castleberry, Dexter Williams, Justin Law, Jack Hipps, Jonquarius Haynes, James Palmore and Wayne Cooley.

The coaches are Grant Hammack and Jay Allen.
